Information About Your Ability to Benefit

Hi {#First Name#},

If you plan to apply for the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), Aid for Part-Time Study (APTS) or any State scholarship (e.g. Excelsior Scholarship), the New York State Education Law stipulates that you must also demonstrate an ability to benefit.

The ability to benefit is demonstrated by graduating from a U.S. high school, a College Degree, completing a state approved home school program, or by earning a New York State High School Equivalency Diploma. Students who have earned 24 college credits as required by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) can receive a New York State High School Equivalency Diploma.

Your academic record indicates that you do not satisfy the ability to benefit requirement at this time. To be deemed eligible for TAP, APTS or the Excelsior Scholarship this Fall 2018 you must receive a New York State High School Equivalency Diploma or take and PASS the “Ability to Benefit” (ATB) exam by September 14, 2018. If you feel you have earned the required 24 college credits you can receive a NYS High School Equivalency Diploma by successfully completing the Application for the New York State High School Equivalency Diploma Based on Earned College Credit overseen by SED’s High School Equivalency (HSE) Office. The application can be found here.

It is strongly advised that you test early to allow time for possible intervention. Students who do not pass any portion of the ATB exam must participate in a workshop at Hunter College before retesting. Retesting must be preceded by a minimum of 20 hours of instruction.

ATB testing is conducted in the Testing Center, Room 150 Hunter North Building. View the ATB webpage for testing dates & times and access to test preparation material. for testing dates & times and access to test preparation material. If you believe that you meet the eligibility requirements stated above, you may contact Lori Welch, Associate Director of Undergraduate Admissions and Recruitment, by replying to this message.
